Agile boot camp

My organization had arranged for Agile Software Development methodology boot camp. I happen to attend the two days training. I had a great learning session because of the great knowledge of the faculty. Now I now about Agile and its values, principles and several ways to implement them. I have always worked on traditional software development methodology and am still a fan of it for the reason that it has also been iterative in approach. So I like both these methods. Uploading favicon in blogger domain

After minimunch, I was determined to change the favicon for my blogger site too. I was quite bored with the 'B' icon of blogger. So to note my name, I added a favicon 'L' as in Lakshmi and it successfully reflects now.

I am going to mention in short what I did to get it done for blogger.

1. Am sure everyone will have a yahoo account. So upload your .ico file to yahoo briefcase and this is what I did.

2. Now try to click on the uploaded path in the yahoo briefcase. A url will open up showing your icon on the web page. copy the url.

3. Paste the below content by replacing the "title" tag. This title tag appears on the edit HTML as one of the top rows.

Windows movie maker - unable to save movie file

I was trying to save my movie file for several hours and landed up getting severe headache. I tried many things to get rid of the error but in vain. Finally out of luck or something I could save my movie file. Instead of explaining the failure cases, let me only let you know what I did and how the file got saved.

1. Download your video from youtube or whichever location it is in. If it is .flv format, you will have to change it to .wmv format or compatible formats that windows movie maker supports. winff is a freeware available in the internet which converts the video files to required formats. So you can download this to convert to .wmv format.

2. Add the video files to the windows movie maker. You can clip your videos too in this tool. Once you are ready with the final videos, you can save this movie file. You are done!

Though I tried these steps again and again, I had failed. The only difference was I used the trial version of Total video converter software available in the internet. Perhaps this may be the reason why it might not have worked. winff is a freeware and no trial version is needed. So just go ahead and try this and am sure you will be able to save your movie file using windows movie maker. Cheers!

Blogger changing to new template skin problems

God, I was having a tough time last night and this morning with my blog. All I had tried was to change to a new template skin for my blog site. Though I had backed up my old template I was facing weird problems changing to a new one. I finally got frustrated and wanted to revert to my old skin and there came the problem. I could not get back to my old skin despite the back up taken. I got this error: XML error message: The reference to entity "postID" must end with the ';' delimiter.

Page element rearrange error in Blogger.com

I always get this error when I try to rearrange my page elements.

I am tired of retrying and refreshing the page. I fail. So what is the solution? Too simple. It struck me quite late though.

Just go to Edit HTML of your blog site. Am assuming that your page elements are arranged one after the other in your page either on the left side or right side. You will find codes similar to this one:

Just cut them and paste whichever position you want them to appear on and then save the template. You are done. View your blog and you will see the new rearranged elements in your blog.

How to convert the clip art image into a .png, .jpg,.bmp,.tif, .gif,.ico and so on

I was just thinking aloud on how to convert a clip art image into a .png, .jpg,.bmp,.tif, .gif,.ico and so on. I tried to right-click and was looking for 'Save As' option on that image. Well, it was not there and it was only showing ways of editing the clip art.

Here are some ways using which you can convert the clip art images to files your required and convenient extension.

1. Using SnagIt software - This one is a very easy to use, mark capture tool. You can mark the clip art image that you want to convert using this tool. The tool immediately opens up in the SnagIt editor mode showing your marked clip art image. Just click File->Save As and you are done! I presume that you can get the trial version of this software to experiment the ease of use.

2. Adobe Photoshop - Again, a very convenient and popular tool. I don't see a need to explain more here :)

3. Microsoft Picture Organizer - you can open your clipart with it and save/export your clipart to many file formats.

Mozilla Firefox won't start up

It was a mess for more than 3 hrs while I tried to figure out why Firefox browser did not start up. I tried to install the Alexa toolbar in my Firefox browser and that goofed up everything.

From that point, I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox many times but in vain. I tried to check the knowledge base of Firefox website and the steps explicated there did not work me unfortunately. I confirmed that it must be some other weird problem.

I was continuously checking other websites for help. I noticed one solution of creating a new profile for accessing the Firefox browser.

I typed the following command:
1. Click on the start -> run.
2. Type the command firefox.exe -P
3. A window pops up showing the default profile name. The window will have option of creating another profile. You can create a profile using your name and click the ok button

You are done :). From then on, Firefox opens up successfully.

I completed PMP....:)

Hello All,

I passed the PMP exam on July 17th 2006. The exam was a bit tough. Never mind. All of you can make it to the exam and come out in flying colors. Instead of giving my experience of how the exam went, let me give some details on what you all can look for while preparing for the exam. Materials Used: 1. PMBOK - Pls read this book three times definitely. Each time you read you will get more details and understand it better. I did the same thing.

First time when you read nothing goes into the grey matter. Only from second time on, we really delve into the details and start accepting things. 2. Rita's PMP Exam Prep - Really useful book that explicates PMBOK in an easily understandable way. Take the questions at the end of every chapter very seriously. For the questions that you get wrong, please do root cause analysis to find out what made you choose the wrong answer.

Next time you wont make that mistake. I did the same thing. Also, after reading PMBOK two times and Exam Prep two times, my sincere advise would be to read one chapter in PMBOK and the same chapter in Exam Prep (dont forget to write the practice questions again). You will understand it really well.

3. Rita's Risk Management - Now comes risk management. I would say that to really know how risk management is to be conducted in projects, this book is very useful. So you can read this book once to practically remember what comes after what process. Its worth the read. But dont get engrossed in this. Just get the overall view of what has been said.

4. Mock Questions I practiced close to 1000 questions. It is just to gain confidence to face the exam. Nothing more nothing less. No question will anyway appear in the real exam. Try to score more than 70% in those exams that you practice. Daily study for atleast 2 hours and weekends spend from 6 to 8 hours of time. Be in touch with the subject and you will be ready in 2 months. One main thing. Go infront of the mirror daily atleast once and tell yourself that you will comeout in flying colors.. It works very well.. I did it for quite some days.. think positively.. be prepared for the worst.. Not sure how many of you believe in god.. but put in efforts and you will enjoy the fruits at the end.. You got to be optimistic..

Tell yourself every now and then that you will pass the exam.. On the exam day... Take deep breaths whenever possible. Eat to the correct level. Don't over eat cos you may doze off.. Remember its a 4 hour exam.. Go to the exam room expecting worst thing but tell yourself that you will manage the show and this is precisely what had happened to me yesterday. Try to take breaks after every 50 questions. Finish the first pass of questions at a stretch and mark the questions that you are unsure..

For the next round of review, finish the marked questions first. Take a break... come back and am sure you will have time.. Just browse thru all the 200 questions and feel for yourself on your confidence level. For example, what I did was used cheetah learning institute's techinque of calculating the correctness of answer - mapping them to 85% 50% and 25%.. sum them and you will know what will be your score range .. alteast you will get to know that you cleared the exam even before submitting.
